The Digital Trade and Future Commerce Policy Workshop organized by ITD and World Bank

On May 18-20, 2021, the International Institute for Trade and Development (Public Organization) in partnership with the World Bank Group has been organized the Workshop on “Digital Trade and Future Commerce Policy Workshop” via Cisco Webex online platform. The opening and welcoming ceremony presided over by Mr. Manu Sitthiprasasana, Executive Director of International Institute for Trade and Development and Ms. Birgit Hansl, the World Bank Country Manager for Thailand.



The objectives of this workshop were to provide the safety measures resulted in massive supply disruption, and forced the world to adopt the Digital Age in full in order to continue the flow of economy, including the implement of e-commerce. However, the current policies and regulations are outdated and does not covered today e-commerce in its entirety, in conflict with the massive increase in internet traffic that only have an upward tread. ITD organized the Digital Trade and Future Commerce Policy Workshop which is expected to transfer the knowledge and technical skills related to digital trade and, and inform the emerging issues relevant to the future of commerce engagement. Besides, the training course is expected to be one type of platform for international cooperation within the Asia-Pacific region by having Thailand’s support on the international cooperation and policy development.



This workshop has been succeeding by the cooperation with specialists including Ms. Natasha Beschorner (Senior Digital Development Specialist, the World Bank Group) and Dr. Le Quang Lan (Assistant Director ICT and Tourism Division, ASEAN Secretariat) who were presented under the main topic on “Trade Policy in the Digital Era”. Moreover, Dr. Sak Segkhoonthod (Advisor, Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) Thailand) together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chackrit Duangphastra (Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University) and Dr. Bundit Uljih (Legal Official, International Tax Expert) gave a presentation in a topic of “Digital law and Regulation in ASEAN”, then Mr. Ankur Huria (Senior Private Sector Specialist, World Bank) spoke on the topic “Reforming Customs Administration Measures for SME participation” with Dr. Rachda Chiasakul (CEO Bolliger and Company, Thailand) as a moderator. Furthermore, Dr. Narisa Chauvidul-Aw (CEO and Founder of KōgoPAY Group) together with Mr. Tanin Sammanee (CEO and Co-Founder of Deepscope) and Mr. Prinn Panitchpakdi (Chairman of the Agribusiness committee, Ministry of Agriculture and Director, New Economy Academy, Ministry of Commerce) gave a panel discussion on “Future of Commerce Landscape” with Ms. Kulthirath Pakawachkrilers (CEO & Co-Founder, TeC Thailand) as a moderator.



The workshop was attended by 57 participants; 8 foreigners (Cambodia, Japan, Korea, Laos, and Singapore) and 49 Thais, including policy makers, government officers and stakeholders in digital trade (including trade council, investment authority).
