Building a sustainable bioeconomy for today and tomorrow

Background
Bioeconomy strategies play a crucial role in catalyzing the transition towards more efficient and responsible value chains, while concurrently reducing pressure on the global environment. The attention to bioeconomy has been growing around the world, including in the Asia-Pacific region. The G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy (GIB) agreed on ten high-level principles to guide the development of sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-driven bioeconomy pathways. FAO has been strengthening efforts to advance bioeconomy as part of its current strategic framework for agrifood system transformation; likewise, the focus of UNEP’s next Climate Technology Progress Report 2025 is on bioeconomy. In addition, global frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework also provide critical global reference points to the bioeconomy principles by emphasizing sustainable production, biodiversity conservation, and climate-resilient development.

With technical support of:
– Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

This side event is organized to discuss how bioeconomy can lead towards the transformation of economies for today and tomorrow. This will provide a platform to exchange knowledge and experiences on various dimensions of bioeconomy for macroeconomic policies, poverty reduction, and sustainable development.

Leading Questions
– What global policy signals are most relevant for integrating bioeconomy into macroeconomic strategies?
– How can bioeconomy pathways contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement and Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework commitments?
– In what ways can bioeconomy approaches directly accelerate SDG 1 (poverty alleviation) while ensuring inclusive development?
– What are the most successful examples of national or regional bioeconomy strategies in Asia-Pacific, and what lessons can be adapted across the region?
– How can experiences from UNECLAC countries in Latin America and the Caribbean inspire Asia-Pacific in linking bioeconomy to inclusive growth and climate resilience?
– What role can regional cooperation (ASEAN, APEC, ESCAP, FAO) play in scaling bioeconomy for sustainable trade and investment?
